The Sara Palin Factor

I think everyone is worried about the wrong things; the fact that she doesn’t have foreign relations or national experience is not why McCain chose her; he is going after the people Hillary Clinton called “Hard Working, Uneducated, Invisible Americans.” That is who Sarah Palin is going to appeal to in a major way. Just throwing her high school picture in an ad will show them that she looked like them and came from similar beginnings. This is the Sara Palin they want that constituency to meet.

Don’t sleep on this, it will bite the Dems right in the Red, White and Blue Ass.

The United States is Not a Chess Game

When I first heard of McCain’s VP pick, I thought touché, brilliant move. Later that afternoon I chuckled a lot, I thought it was amusing and now that I have read her resume and seen the video, I am just pissed off.  John McCain chose a PR move over the national security of our country. Instead of choosing a seriously qualified woman for VP, he is choosing to put my life and the life of my family and the life of my nation in the hands of a “Hockey Mom.” No disrespect, but WTF.

While I don’t believe I would ever have an abortion, I definitely support a woman’s right to choose. Has this woman ever met a world leader; Alaska is close to Russia, has she secretly met Putin? Is the GOP considering that a part of her foreign relations experience? But wait, she doesn’t even have “National Relations” experience.

There are so many other qualified and more experienced Republican women he could have chosen, I don’t understand. If the American people choose to vote for this woman because she was a beauty queen and she has a child with downs syndrome and she has five children and her son is about to be deployed and she eats moose burgers…give me a fu*king break!

John McCain is playing chess with this country’s future. He’s betting that most of America will vote for a white woman before they vote for a black man, it’s sad but true. He’s betting on women being stupid enough to fall for this obvious ploy to get Hillary’s supporters to vote for him. But if the women who supported Hillary truly supported the things she believed in and not just the fact that she is a woman then John McCain has made a fatal error. They are not going to give up their pro-choice beliefs just to see a woman as vice president. They don’t want their sons and daughters and husbands to continue to be killed and maimed in a war that doesn’t make sense anymore (it never really did). It shows that he doesn’t have the judgment to be president.

I just hope the American people get to Checkmate this blunder. Dang, this is making me want to eat a pie.

Obama-Biden Inspiration and Policy to Boot

The last couple days have been very emotional around my house. I wrote an email to a friend that I want to share here.

Over the last several weeks I started to feel maybe Barack’s quiet strength wasn’t going to be enough for me to truly believe he could protect me and this country. I needed to see his strength; I needed to see that he wouldn’t be passive when it really mattered. He showed me that he will have the strength of mind and character to take care of this nation in the right way. I know the Right is trying to paint him as the second coming and of course that is not who is he or wants to be, but this man has just made me believe in my country again. Look, I was raised a staunch Democrat, but I am one of those Reagan Democrats that the political pundits are always talking about; I gave the Republicans a chance to prove to me that they could run this country better; they can’t. I am also a staunch believer in the separation of church and state and when the Republicans made the Church and Christianity a part of the political discourse in this country, it let me know that they are a party that I can’t believe in; I can’t give them a second chance or the benefit of the doubt anymore. I would never “not” vote because I believe it’s a right and a privilege; but in recent years I have not been inspired, I just voted because I believed it was my civic duty to do so. I am now a proud registered Independent and when I go into that booth this November, my heart will be full, my mind will be clear and “I will be voting for Barack Obama not because he is a black man but because he is a brilliant man.”© He may not win, but that’s okay too; I’m just glad I am here and alive to witness this improbable journey/movement.

Okay, I’ll jump down off my soapbox now.

But before I go, I want you to listen to an excerpt from MLK’s last speech.

Yea, who did kill the electric car?

I was watching the Democratic National Convention tonight and one segment was a Town Hall about energy and the economy. One thing that struck me was the discussion about having about 100,000 hybrid cars on the road in 4 years; the amounts may have been more or less, but you get the gist. There was a discussion about the government giving car companies incentives to build these cars and to build them in the United States, creating new green jobs. It gave me pause and made me say, “Hmm…

I just saw a movie called, “Who Killed The Electric Car?” about the auto industry and the state of California working in cahoots to destroy the electric car because of their short sightedness and greed.

The film details the California Air Resources Board‘s reversal of the mandate after suits from automobile manufacturers, the oil industry, and theGeorge W. Bush administration. It points out that Bush’s chief influences, Dick CheneyCondoleezza Rice, and Andrew Card, are all former executives and board members of oil and auto companies.

I’m all about lowering carbon emissions, improving fuel efficiency and getting better gas mileage, but I don’t know how interested I am in giving corporations more incentives to do the right thing and to stop being greedy. Because of American corporate and senate greed, we are so far behind Europe and China in creating a green economy that works for its corporations and its people. American corporations in Europe and China abide by those government’s standards with no problem because if they want to sell their products, they have no other choice. We need that kind of leadership in this country and I hope our next president can provide that kind of necessary courage and leadership.

Black Folks Going Green

Kim Wayans is Green. On her recent visit to Planet Green’s “SupperClub”, she talked about being diagnosed with mercury poisoning, taking a year off to cleanse the toxic metal out of her system and becoming interested in Green issues. Kim and her husband Kevin Knotts are co-authors of a series of books about biracial children and the issues facing them. The first book is Amy Hodgepodge: All Mixed Up. Check it out!

During a recent guest appearance on Planet Green’s “SupperClub”, Aisha Tyler talked about how she lived a green life growing up and how composting is second nature to her. She wrote her college thesis on Global Warming and she drives a Prius for goodness sakes.

Juan Williams Just Blew My Mind

As most of us know or should know, Juan Williams is a conservative political pundit on Fox News (their Sunday show in particular). Most of the time I am loath to listen to anything he has to say regarding the politics of this country, but last night, he surprised me…just watch

While I agree that there are many broken families in the black community, Juan must be living in a bubble because there are also many many many functional, happy middle class black families that are whole and intact. Juan Williams is among that middle class. I am heartened by the fact that he recognized the historical significance of Michelle and the speech she gave last night at the Democratic National Convention. She’s a women, mom, sister, daughter and wife. Whether you agree with their politics or not, there can be no mistake that Barack and Michelle have created the quintessential American Family and I am so proud of them as parents, human beings, Americans specifically and African Americans in particular.

Where’s the Green on This Plate? — My Thoughts Exactly!

Much like the writer of the article below, I was so looking forward to Emeril and Whole Foods doing wonderful things with this show. Since I am going green (becoming cliche already, I know) in my own life, I thought it would be a great place to learn more nutritious earth friendly recipes. Well, not so fast! Basically the only thing Green about this show is the fact that it is being taped in Whole Foods, which is a shame because of all the wonderful foods they have in that store, he isn’t utilizing them to much advantage. Emeril is cooking the way he always has and I’m sorry but I don’t want to eat that way anymore. Foods with tons of butter and heavy cream and enormous amounts of fat are over; I mean we barely eat chicken anymore and when we do, it is definitely without the skin. Actually, it’s pretty disgusting with skin now; we can’t stomach it. My refrigerator is filled with healthy green veggies, whole grains, etc.

The same would go for the winner of the Next Food Network Star. I love Aaron McCargo Jr. but he is cooking the fattiest foods and even though I like his personality, I have to do so much tweaking to his recipes to make them healthy. I know healthy foods isn’t the direction of his show, but come on; he is cooking up heart attacks on a plate every Sunday. I hope he starts adding some meals that are more nutritious.

Where’s the Green on This Plate?

PLANET GREEN

One of the shows I was most looking forward to on Discovery’s new Planet Green network was Emeril Green. Not because I’m a huge fan of Emeril Lagasse—actually, I liked his original cooking show, The Essence of Emeril, but then Food Network turned him into a catchphrase-shouting gastrotainer. Still, the guy knows his stuff, people like to watch him, and food is the area of life in which people become most intimately involved with the environment. Through food, you literally take in the outside world, and whether you’re concerned about internal effects (what pesticides are doing to your body) or external ones (what factory farming is doing to the ecosystem), eating is the perfect subject for an environmental show. You are what you eat, and you inhabit it as well.

So I watched Planet Green’s marathon debut of Emeril Green to see what kind of information it would offer about food and the environment. Maybe it would explain a little something about what types of seafood are being overfished and which are more sustainable? Look at the importance of eating locally vs. eating organic food from far away? Talk about the amount of petroleum involved in big agriculture? Or the health benefits of organic veggies and grass-fed beef?

Not so much.

Landmark US Study on Healthy Fat People

I read this over at Big Fat Blog. I bet the fat haters choked on their arugula salad (which I love btw) over this. Many fat people have known this for a long time; all fatties aren’t striving to be skinny, some are just striving to be actively healthy. Some fatties aren’t ashamed of being fat and love themselves unconditionally. Many skinny people can’t understand that which is a shame, because you don’t have to be skinny to be healthy and beautiful.

Hmmm…imagine that!

Landmark US Study on Healthy Fat People

News rang out from coast to coast here in the US – even making the front page of The Oregonian – that fat people can be healthy. Kate Harding called in the Duh Truck. The study comes from an Albert Einstein College of Medicine study led by researcher MaryFran Sowers and appeared in Mondays edition of Archives of Internal Medicine. From the AP piece:

A new study suggests that a surprising number of overweight people — about half — have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, while an equally startling number of trim people suffer from some of the ills associated with obesity.
