Do I Need To Purchase A Gun???

Let’s just get right to it; some white folks are buying guns by the barrel load and believe me they’re not all “gun enthusiasts” afraid that Obama is going to impose some outrageous gun control laws in his term as president. Some of these people are getting ready for some idiotic notion that there is an impending race war coming. It has made me think twice about possibly purchasing a gun and taking lessons so that I will be able to protect myself and my family. I have never owned a gun in my life nor have I ever thought it would be necessary for me to own a gun; but the incidents of violence happening around the country are a bit upsetting and frightening.

You’ve got people saying stupid stuff like this:

“He’s a gun-snatcher,” said Jim Pruett, owner of Jim Pruett’s Guns and Ammo in northwest Houston, which was packed with shoppers on Thursday.

“He wants to take our guns from us and create a socialist society policed by his own police force,”
Gun Sales Are Up

What kind of dumb shit is that. This man is a moron, but you have to take morons like this seriously. You never know when a group of angry white people will accost you, hook you up to the back of some pickup and drag you for miles…remember James Byrd. Unfortunately you have to think about your safety first and the idiocy of their logic second.

I’m still not sure it’s the way I want to go, but I am going to discuss it with my family and seriously consider purchasing a handgun…it even pains me to say it.

We are truly a nation of minorities now and folks need to recognize that fact and live up to our nations creed (you know, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). Minorities now outnumber the majority and we just want to live and love in this country like everyone else. If the crazy southern/religious/conservative fringe want to start a race war, they are going to have more than black folks to fight. We are a nation of immigrants — ALL OF US.

White folks always like to say if you don’t like it here in America, take your black ass back to Africa; well, if you don’t like it here in America, I say “Take Your White Ass Back to Europe,” England in particular and see what kind of reception you get.

Or, we can all live in this country peacefully without all of this unnecessary animus and I can put my fear of you and possible need for a handgun purchase to rest.

In the famous words of Rodney King, “Can’t we all just get along.”

Hating and fearing each other gets us no where; hate, ignorance and the angry mob mentality got us Reginald Denny and that tragedy.

Here’s another article on the subject.
Gun Sales Thriving

Stop letting your ignorance and fear be your guide. Leave your 50s mob mentality behind and come along with the rest of us to change this country and make it better for ALL OF US, not just the fortunate few.

Green Watch: India Awesome for Vegetarian Cuisine

Danny Boyle, director of Trainspotting and his latest flick Slumdog Millionaire, talked recently about the experience of filming in India. Besides describing the smell as “humanity, which is our excrement, and saffron, and then excrement again”, Boyle also had some kind things to say about the region’s vegetarian offerings.

“If you’re a vegetarian, you could not go to a better place in the world”, he said. “I’m not a vegetarian, but it is wonderful, and there’s more choice there than anywhere, because it’s a vegetarian nation, although they do eat meats. That food is extraordinary.”

Boyle also said that India is lightyears ahead of any other country in terms of recycling. “It is a bit hippie, and I was never a hippie—I was always a punk—but you do go there to learn,” he said. “You learn about yourself, and obviously about those of us who occupy this planet. They always recycled in India, and we recycle now, because we’re desperately trying to catch up with the fact that we’re destroying the planet. But they’ve recycled forever in India. It’s part of the whole way the nation is built. People throw things away, but as they do it, there’s a whole other class of people who pick those things up.”

Check out the rest of the great interview here. Slumdog Millionaire opens this weekend.

Green Watch: Paula Deen, Smithfield Foods Deliver 25,000 lbs. of Ham to Food Bank in DC

Bless her heart, Paula Deen is such a happy person, and believes she is doing the right thing by delivering “Food.” But really, is ham the only product she could sponsor. Most of that ham will be used by poor and low income residents of the Washington, DC area; even though many middle class residents will also need to partake in the free donations. Processed ham would not have been my preferred food choice, fresh veggies, grains, and legumes would have been a better choice. I hope the people make smart choices but I also understand that when it comes to feeding your family sometimes making the best dietary choice is not realistic…which is really too bad.

Eating a greener diet is so much better for the kids in the long run and I want to help build awareness. Soon we will be launching a new website called One A Day Green.com which will focus on greening up everything in your life from an African American perspective.

WASHINGTON – Paula Deen, the queen of southern cuisine, is visiting D.C. to participate in the Metropolitan Cook-in Event and while she was here, she and Smithfield Foods made a major donation to the Capital Area Food Bank.

Deen says when people think of her, they think of food. “So it’s only appropriate that when I come visiting, I bring food. That’s what southerners do,” said Deen. The Food Network star and Smithfield Foods delivered 25,000 pounds of ham to the Capital Area Food Bank.

She says it’s a privileged to help and the food bank can certainly use it. “Listen to this. Do you know how long that 25,000 pounds of food is going to last? You know hunger is a constant thing,” said Deen.

Green Watch: Obama Reads Michael Pollan

This guy is so in tune with our nation that it’s scary. He understands and is in tune with the problems that factory farming is having on our environment and how it relates to oil. This guy is my hero.

You don’t see this everyday. Obama chats with Time‘s Joe Klein and serves up some critical thinking on food policy, laying out the web of incentives and subsidies that distort our agricultural system:

I was just reading an article in The New York Times by Michael Pollen about food and the fact that our entire agricultural system is built on cheap oil. As a consequence, our agriculture sector actually is contributing more greenhouse gases than our transportation sector. And in the mean time, it’s creating monocultures that are vulnerable to national security threats, are now vulnerable to sky-high food prices or crashes in food prices, huge swings in commodity prices, and are partly responsible for the explosion in our healthcare costs because they’re contributing to type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease, obesity, all the things that are driving our huge explosion in healthcare costs.

The National Review: The Vine

It is so refreshing to have an intelligent man in the office of the presidency who can see more than one side of an issue and address it with critical thinking and forethought.

Yea for us!

Wanda Sykes: Out and About

This Proposition 8 controversy is bringing everyone out of the proverbial closet. Wanda Sykes weighs in with her feelings on the matter. You go girl!

“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation,” the Emmy Award winner said. “I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,”"Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay,” she continued. “But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives.” [...]

Sykes said the ban (also known as California’s Proposition 8) made her feel like she was “attacked.”

“Now, I gotta get in their face,” she said. “I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

Joomla Review: What Kind of Beginner Are You?

This book might be good for beginners, but it depends on what kind of beginner you are. If you have no website building knowledge, then I think this may be a little confusing and may not work for you; but if you have some experience, then I think Joomla can be a powerful tool in helping you create a website and content exactly the way you envision it in your head. Installation is easy and once you’ve created a site it’s easily managed. Take a chance, you might like it.

Celeb Charity Foundations…Be Careful Where You Spend Your Loot

Everything that sparkles isn’t gold or should I say golden. Be careful what charities you give your money to this holiday season. Some celebs, white and black are in it solely for the money…yours!

THEY have good looks, but they could use some serious help straightening out their books.

George Clooney, Bono, Wyclef Jean, Petra Nemcova and a half-dozen other celebs have founded charities that have some eyebrow-raising business practices, The Post uncovered in a sweeping review.

Jean’s charity to help Haitians has failed to file tax returns for eight years. Bono’s mega-foundation chartered a plane to Africa and bought tickets for a U2 concert.

Poker lover George Clooney took in donations from a dubious online card-games company. And Giant Super Bowl hero Osi Umenyiora has dropped the ball when it comes to even registering his charity to benefit Africa and research into Alzheimer’s disease.

“You need to have people managing the organization that are well versed in the letter of the law,” said Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance. “Just because a celebrity is associated with a charity doesn’t mean they are doing any of this.”

Here are 10 celeb charities that raised red flags, according to a Post examination of federal tax forms and other records.

Serena Williams to Open School In Africa

Other black celebs see the merit in opening schools in Africa and have jumped on Oprah’s bandwagon and are riding the Africa School Project wave. I am so excited that more blacks in this country are willing and able to financially help different nations in Africa. We are truly blessed here in America and giving back to the continent from whence we came is a beautiful thing.

Tennis star Serena Williams will visit Kenya this week to open a school she helped fund.

The Serena Williams Secondary School in Matooni will open on Friday, November 14, and Williams will be on site to help. Built through a partnership between the Build African Schools initiative and Hewlett Packard, the school is designed to empower African students through education.

“We are indeed honored to have Ms Williams visit Kenya at this momentous time in American history when we have a new President elect who has roots in Kenya,” said Mr Dickson Mutaiti, the Director of Projects Build African Schools in Kenya. “During her visit, Ms Williams will officially open a secondary school put up in her name, to give chance to needy primary school students who want to pursue secondary school education.”

The school will include a computer classroom, laptops, printers, internet, and training for teachers and students, all courtesy of Hewlett Packard.
