WASHINGTON — So far, the first lady has chosen to be a food bank volunteer with an outsize entourage and an education activist with the largest soapbox imaginable. But Michelle Obama also fills a role that is not of her choosing but that may, in fact, be the most influential: She serves as a symbol of middle-class progress, feminist achievement, affirmative-action success and individual style.
And she has done all this on the world stage, while being black.
Time and again, observers grasp for adjectives to describe Obama’s combination of professional accomplishment and soccer-mom maternalism. It’s no wonder so many eye her with awe and disbelief. Or why a minority still view her with suspicion. There have been few broad cultural precedents for what she represents.
Historically, television has been more progressive than reality, preparing a society for the moment when what only existed in the shadows surges into the spotlight. From “Soap” to “Will & Grace,” TV helped people envision gay couples living picket-fence lives. “Maude” and daytime soap operas raised the topic of abortion before it became a political wedge issue. And popular culture has more than once suggested that the idea of an African-American president wasn’t so far-fetched. But it rarely introduced viewers to anyone like Michelle Obama.

They are not running from their own—they’re chasing after the best they can get. They aren’t assimilationist; they’re ascensionist.

His wife definitely doesn’t; she is basically a ghetto girl. That’s what she says—I’m just being sociological. She grew up in the same place Jennifer Hudson did. She hasn’t reached out to the social community of Washington, and people are waiting to see what they’ll do about that.”
Being the FIRST FAMILY OF THE UNITED STATES isn’t ELITE enough for snobby assed Upper Middle Class Black Folks. 
They are beside themselves because the Obamas aren’t kissing their asses to be apart of their inner circle in Washington and beyond. WTF are these people thinking; they should be falling all over themselves trying to get into Obama’s circle. HE IS THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD ASSHOLES. Why should the First Lady of the United States be expected to chase after the wife of some Doctor, Lawyer, or Indian chief on Martha’s Vineyard for an invitation to a party or lunch or anything for that matter.
On November 8, 2008, THE OBAMAS BECOME “THE ELITE.” So my brothers and sisters (who seem to think those of us who are less fortunate want them to apologize for being successful…NOT) take the stick out of your ass and give the Obamas the same respect you would give any of the other 43 presidents who have served this country.
You dumbasses should be chasing Desiree Rogers the Whitehouse social secretary to get your name on their list and you should be sending gift baskets and toys and anything else you can think of (you’re smart asses, be creative) begging to have Sasha and Malia participate in Jack & Jill of America and your other elitist organizations; instead you feel the Obamas should come to you…it’s not enough to have degrees from Harvard and Princeton or to be the President of the United States, you still are expected to kiss someone’s ass in this country to fit in with your own kind. How sad…that’s snobbery to the ninth degree.

American racism is so hurtful; these people really don’t understand how it hurts your heart and lowers your ability to trust. It makes you question everything you believe in, everything your parents taught you, your values and morals; it makes you question your “God” whatever religion you practice or don’t practice.
The GOP must know that every time one of them lets their racism come out to play, that they are all being painted with the same broad brush. If they can’t contain their “Southern Brothers” and all that southern charm and those good southern manners, they will never win another presidential election and their local elections are going to keep turning blue.
You can disagree with our president all you want, you can hate his policy decisions and because this is America you can voice your opinion every day of the week, but you must show the first family the respect they deserve regardless of their skin color…but of course the Dumbass Brigade is not smart enough to do all these things and chew gum at the same time.
During the campaign they thought it was cute to depict President Obama as the monkey Curious George and now they are calling First Lady Michelle Obama a Gorilla. What kind of shit is that, I’ll tell you what kind of shit it is, it’s BULLSHIT. It’s the shitty republican party at it’s shitty best.
Also, for all you f*ck-wads that are now saying, “this is not what I voted for,” WAKE THE HELL UP and stop whining and complaining. Were you not listening to Barack during the campaign because for the most part he is doing everything he said he would. He is not veering off the path too much at all and to all my gay brothers and sister and DOMA, I believe I remember the President saying he was not in favor of GAY MARRIAGE but he was in favor of CIVIL UNIONS and would leave it all to the states. STOP ACTING LIKE HE SAID SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BECAUSE HE DIDN’T.

First Lady Sparks Frenzy At London All-Girls School April 02, 2009 11:57 AM ABC News ’ Yunji de Nies and Karen Travers report: Who caused all the shrieking at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language School in London today? A surprise visit from English soccer star David Beckham? Pop boy band, the Jonas Brothers? No, that was First Lady Michelle Obama sparking a frenzy at the all-girls school, where she spoke about the importance of education, explained why being smart is cool and even shared a little girl talk about her courtship with her husband, President Obama. The school’s focus is teaching English as a primary language to underprivileged students in an
impoverished area of London. It is named for the first female doctor in the United Kingdom and its buildings are named after famous women, including a Frida Kahlo arts building and an Emily Bronte building for English studies. “This school is incredible and you should be very proud,” the first lady said. As she has done with school students in Washington D.C., the first lady talked about her own experience growing up in a working-class Chicago neighborhood and the influence her family had on her upbringing. “I am an example of what’s possible when girls are loved and nurtured by the women around them,” she said. Mrs. Obama emphasized the power of an education and said she was standing there today because of her education. “By getting a good education you too can create your own destiny. I never cut class. I like being smart. I thought being smart was the coolest thing in the world,” she said. “You are the women that will build the world as it should be and that’s why a good education is so important.” The first lady appeared to get choked up when she told the students, “All of you are jewels you are precious and you touch my heart.”

I am sure there have been many posts on many blogs about the color of Michelle’s skin and whether she is of the darker or lighter hue and the cultural significance of that. There was a little scuttlebutt about her shoulders and about the fact that the fashionistas are finding it very difficult to dictate what First Lady Obama wears. Well, I think it’s all BS. Michelle is her own woman and will not be dictated to by any one for any reason. She will rear her children her way, wear which designers she chooses (if any) and who gives a fuck what color her skins is, look at her, she is MAGNIFICENT.
Black women have already defined what black beauty is in their community, Michelle is redefining it for the rest of America. She’s a beautiful woman and there is no denying it.
