Pooh and I’m Not Talking About Winnie

I have been really focused on my eating this week and I can tell the difference already. How? Well, it’s all in the Pooh, and I’m not talking about Winnie.

Recently my pooh has smelled really rotten and it’s because of the crappy food I have been eating. I know what a good healthy bowel movement should smell and look like and all of the unhealthy food in my digestive tract waiting to be expelled, ain’t it.

Don’t get me wrong, when you eat a healthy diet your pooh doesn’t smell like lavender and peaches, but it has a different kind of stink, that’s not putrid.

I am eating fresh fruit and vegetables, mostly raw and feel and smell better.

Now I think it’s time a colonic…clean out the old colon.

I’m Baaaaack

It has been a very long time since I have posted to my ChaoticFat blog about being fat. I got so sidetracked with other things in my life and just left my weight to fend for itself and as usually, a child left alone will indulge.

My food intake isn’t focused, I am not exercising and have gained a great deal of weight. It’s really very pathetic. But, I’m motivated to change my ways and get back on a track and focus most of my energy on getting healthy again.

So get ready for this ride; as always, I will be brutally honest about my progress and all of the crazy things that happen when you are obese and trying to lose weight (without surgery).

Who the hell wants to think about Dementia?

If you’re 40 or older, you do. I was listening to NPR this morning on my way to work (because I’m an NPR Junkie) and got a little freaked out being that I am a woman of a certain age and have to start thinking about the next part of my life and how healthy I will be as I run into it. Because let’s face it after a certain age, the years go by so fast you sometimes feel like you completely missed it.

Can you believe that cholesterol can help warp your mind…CHOLESTEROL.  Son of a bitch! Now I bet you wished you had paid attention to your doctor when she said be cognizant of your HDL and LDL, don’t ya?

Here is the printed version of the story I heard this morning:

Midlife Cholesterol Linked To Dementia

August 10, 2009

Light micrograph of atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque on arterial walls

This light micrograph shows a thick buildup of cholesterol-containing plaques along the walls of an artery. A recent study shows that there is an association between high cholesterol and dementia. Visuals Unlimited/Corbis

Attention 40-year-olds: This may be the time to start thinking about maintaining your brain. One action item: Check your cholesterol.

Recent studies suggest that high cholesterol levels in midlife raise the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia in later life.

“What’s good for the heart is good for the mind,” says researcher Rachel Whitmer of Kaiser Permanente. Her study, published in the journal Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders, found that even borderline-high cholesterol levels (200 to 239 milligrams per deciliter) in middle age raised the risk of late-life dementia by about 50 percent.

Here is the rest of the story.

Food Watch: The Joys of Palm Sugar and Agave Nectar

Via: Telegraph.co.uk

Alternative sugars are often too chemical – but there are exceptions

By Rose Prince

Palm sugar is made by boiling the nectar of coconut palm in a two-stage process which leaves a hard, caramel-type substance which can then be ground to powder. The importers, Speciality Farm Foods, say that palm sugar has the lowest GI of any sugar, meaning that it only gradually raises blood glucose levels, giving a steadier supply of energy which is ideal fora child and reduces sugar cravings.

Agave nectar, sometimes sold as agave syrup, is an excellent substitute for golden syrup. It has the added advantage of being nutritious (while refined sugar is nutritionally bankrupt). It is also low GI but, better than that, it is much sweeter than sugar, so less is needed. It can be heated, makes very good flapjacks and works well in a sticky ginger cake.

Fat Watch: He Said, “Can I Help You Sir”… Twice!

My first reaction was, did you just call me a man? My first thought was, damn I have really let myself disintegrate into nothingness. I guess I have accepted my fat so much that I am not seeing myself as I really am; my body image is hella distorted and right now my self-esteem is really fu@ked up. I really just stopped caring once I got to a certain level of obesity; I assumed I would be this way for the rest of my life and being invisible to the world wasn’t that bad. Except, you are not really invisible…hey, someone just thought I was a man.

me-31My heart is breaking and I must do something. I have to change my trajectory, find another life path because this one is no longer working for me. I mean come on, he called me “SIR” twice and didn’t really reafat3lize the mistake until I said something. My ego can’t handle that; I used to look like this (pic on left) and now I look like this (pic on right). It’s tragic!

Stem Cell Research = May Save Lives, Definitely Creates Jobs in California

On Monday, President Obama abolished Bush’s limits on Stem Cell Research and the GOP and Religious Right are in a tizzy with their panties in a bunch. He’s doing exactly what he said he would do; don’t they get it. He’s true to his word, he wasn’t faking it.

Republican Congressman Eric Cantor displayed his idiocy here:

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor claims that rescinding Bush’s stem cell ban “distracts” us from the economy

HOW???? Is he on crack? It may “distract” the Republicans since they are not really participating in this recovery, except to be obstructionists. The Republicans need to shit or get off the pot and stop playing games.

WHY ARE THE RETHUGLIGANS SO AFRAID OF SCIENCE?

Also, here is a great article from our friends at Jack & Jill Politics

It’s funny — listening to people like Jim Cramer on the Today show this am, you’d think that Obama was wasting time and getting distracted by issues unrelated to the economy (but related to “special interests”) like re-opening stem cell research.

I live in the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose Bay Area and if you look at the local news yesterday and today here (TV and newspaper), folks are pretty excited about the surge this will create for Bay Area biotech firms. Holding back this research has actually held back an important sector here. The news is all about training employees fast enough for the new jobs this can create here. They are good jobs too including young technicians. Stem cell research happens to be vital to the economy of California, which by the way, is one of the largest in the U.S. and the world.

Here’s the San Jose Merc:

Shares in California stem cell companies jumped and researchers rejoiced Monday after President Obama ended an eight-year limit on federal funding for studies of embryonic stem cells. [...]

The signing ceremony at the White House was heavily attended by scientific notables and officials from California, which has committed $3 billion to a taxpayer-funded stem cell research funding program to keep the state at the forefront of the field.

Supporters are hoping that the groundwork laid by the program will give California research centers the edge in winning federal grants under the new administration policy. Such basic research grants bring science to the point where private companies can invest, said Dr. Deepak Srivastava, director of UCSF’s Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease in San Francisco, a center of stem cell research.

“Until recently, most of the private capital has stayed on the sidelines due to the federal policy and the early stage of the work,” Srivastava said. “I think that will change because private industry will see that this whole field will be jump-started.”

By signing the order, the President is helping to ensure America’s continued global leadership in scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs — essential not only for the country’s economic prosperity, but for the progress of all humanity. Sure, the research is controversial and I am excited personally about the promise adult stem cells hold. Still opening stem cell research completely will get us further faster to improve lives through better jobs and better healthcare. Furthermore, the majority of Americans – from across the political spectrum, and of all backgrounds and beliefs – agree with the scientific community that we should pursue this research. So those who say that stem cell research has nothing to do with the economy just doesn’t get it.
